Antoine Barada and My Search for the Truth

“It was a spring day in Paris in 1780, and Michael Barada, was 20. As he sauntered along a fashionable street, very gay in the silk, ribbons and ruffles of a young French gallant of the court of Louis XVI . . .” So begins the charming story of Michael Barada and his chance meeting with the lovely Omaha maiden, Laughing Buffalo. This romantic fairytale was told to the US congress in 1934 in a bill granting my grandfather and other descendants of Laughing Buffalo membership in the Omaha tribe. The bill never passed but this unlikely fairytale became part of our history. Am I part Omaha? Is Laughing Buffalo my great grandmother? And if this story isn’t true what is her real story? Antoine’s Legacy is my search for the truth and my Omaha roots.

Hi Bobby, You look so much like your uncle; my grandfather. I think its wonderfull that you desided to put in print, the stories we’ve been told over the years. I am getting married to a man who has no family. Ive tried to explain “family” to him. It will be wonderfull for him to read about mine. Thank you. Debra Lea Mintz Rosen . Soon to be Debra Lea Clemons.
P.S. Donna, your cousin, my mother would love to have a copy.

Hi, I just read Antoine’s Legacy. I found and ordered it after doing some of my own research on line about Antoine, who is also my great, great, great grandfather. My great, great grandfather is Walter Valentine Peters(Maggie’s brother)whose parents were Fulton and Euphrosine. I have a lot of information about the family history that you may not have, such as some stories about some of the Peters side of the family as well as some variation to the stories you have about Antoine. Let me know if you would like them, I would be happy to share them with you.

Seeing here name in the book was such a joy. I am giving a copy of Antoine’s Legacy to my brothers ( Benjamin and David) for a holiday gift. Thank you for writing this book. Danielle
